Mello Velo was founded in 2009, in the Westcott neighborhood of Syracuse, New York, based on a simple premise:
to create the best independent, locally owned, friendly bike shop around.
We felt that Syracuse needed a place where every rider feels welcome—from the road racer to commuter, mountain biker to fixie kid, whether you’re eight or eighty, or bank account balance closer to zero or to 2 million. We love bikes so much, we want our place to be a part of everyone's daily experience—an honest, knowledgeable, and professional shop that you can depend on for quick repair and maintenance service.
With the internet age, we have reveled in the human interactions that a computer screen cannot provide. We've built relationships with so many great people simply connecting with them over a 200-year-old machine. Our goal has never been to show off how many bikes we can fit on our sales floor and pump them out the door. It's always been about creating community—one that's inclusive and as diverse as our many customers. We choose to do business with companies that share in this belief.
We will finally be moving to our new home in 2017, a vacant former waste paper and rag recycling warehouse from the days of the Erie Canal!
Inventory, Special Orders, and Pricing
It's super important to us to carry quality bikes, gear, and apparel at several different price points, so we only choose to stock bikes and brands we know and love, whether new or used. We place special orders throughout the week and just about any small part can be in your hands in just 2-3 days.
We can special order anything from high-end parts, to that special basket, and any other accessory you can think of. Even if you’re not exactly sure what you want, we’ll help you figure out several different options to fit your budget and needs. We strive to provide fair pricing on all our products— consequently, we regularly beat other online retailers' prices, including Amazon, so please give us the opportunity to match our competition, just stop in and talk to us!
Ultimately, we want to build a Syracuse bicycle culture, and will strive to educate and inspire our customers. Whether it's advocating for more bike lanes, going for a fun ride, cleaning up the trails, or organizing one of our many educational efforts and repair clinics, our goal is to share our sales, service, and general bicycle expertise and passion.
Mello Velo is rider owned and operated. We welcome you to stop by and hang out a while—sip some brew, read one of our unique cycling magazines, try your hand at wrenching on your own bike at our Community Bench, check out our bike rental and demo program, or just pet our shop dog, Maxwell Smart.
